We recently got a call from a business owner in Euclid OH who had an old push bar exit device on their back door that was barely working anymore. You can see in the first few photos what we were dealing with. The bar was beat up, the end cap was chipped, and the latch mechanism on the side of the door was barely hanging. For a commercial door that gets used every single day, that kind of wear and tear becomes a safety issue fast. So our technician Jimmy headed out to the property, just a short drive from places like Sims Park and the Shore Cultural Centre, to change it out with a brand new unit.
The old push bar had to come off first. Once we pulled it, you could see the rough shape of the door edge where the latch used to sit. We cleaned up the mounting points, lined up the new hardware, and got it bolted in tight. We also replaced the outside lever trim with a fresh stainless steel plate and a new lever handle, which you can see in the photos. The lever has a keyed cylinder so the owner can still lock it from outside when the shop is closed, but people inside can always push the bar and walk right out. That is what makes it a panic device, and code requires it on most commercial exit doors.

For this job we went with hardware from trusted brands you may have heard of like Von Duprin, Detex, and Yale. These are the names most locksmiths in the area trust because they hold up to heavy daily use and meet fire and life safety codes. We also adjusted the strike plate so the latch catches cleanly every time the door shuts. A loose strike is one of the most common reasons a push bar starts to fail early.
Here is a quick tip if you own a business with a push bar. Check it once a month. Push it a few times and listen for grinding or sticking. If the bar feels loose or the latch does not catch, call a locksmith before it fails completely. A broken exit device can mean a fire code violation and a fine from the city inspector. It also leaves your back door easy to force open.
