Keypad Locks

Keypad locks are an easy way to upgrade the security of your home or office. And, they can be a much more convenient and user-friendly option than traditional keys.

But, you might be wondering whether it’s really worth making the change. What are the benefits of keypad locks? What do they cost? And are there any security vulnerabilities you should know about?

Here at Advanced Lock and Key, we’ve worked with Cleveland-based clients everywhere from Jefferson to Industrial Valley to Forest Hill and beyond to make sure they trust their security system. So, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of one of our most popular requests: keypad locks.

What is a keypad lock?

Instead of using a mechanical key to open the lock, a keypad lock relies on a numerical code. In terms of the internal functioning on the lock, everything is exactly the same as a traditional lock. In fact, in many cases, you can simply remove your current lock and place the keypad lock in the existing housing in the door. Keypad locks can also be used for both deadbolts and latch-based locks, so you can choose the level of security that’s needed for your space.

Depending on the keypad lock, the door can be opened with just one passcode or a set number of passcodes. Having more passcodes gives the user more control over the lock, as they can retire codes individually. This is helpful in settings that use temporary codes.

Here is an example of our work:

This Willowick Business needed a new cylinder to prevent tampering or picking and also wanted a key that the employees couldn’t copy.

We provided them with mul-t-lock high security cylinders that are pick proof and also keys that can’t be copied anywhere.

Keyless locks are very popular these days. Homes and businesses need the convenience of key less locks to limit key distribution and be able to change codes easily when needed.

This business in Middleburg Heights Ohio needed to have easy access to an internal door and the old setup had a push bar and a dead bolt which made it hard to access the door and needed a key each time.

We installed the best electronic key pad lock by Trilogy which has multiple user capabilities and awesome features such as timer options to open and close automatically and other functions to serve your needs.

Another happy customer. Advanced lock and key.

When are keypad locks a good idea?

There are a few different scenarios in which keypad locks are preferable to other options:

  • Homeowners who rent their space. If you have your home listed on a rental site, you can see why it would be more convenient to provide guests with a keypad instead of a physical key. Some keypad locks can be recalibrated after every stay or every use to keep your guests and your home safe.
  • Large families. For families with teens, adult children visiting from college, and even extended family who tend to drop by frequently, it can be useful to have a code instead of many spare keys. It’s certainly safer than leaving a spare underneath the welcome mat.
  • Commercial spaces. Office settings are often ideal locations for keypad locks. It can keep your workplace safe and cut down on the cost of cutting keys for new employees. You can also lower the risk of a lockout resulting from an employee leaving their keys at home or locking them inside the store.

Are all keypad locks smart?

Keypad locks can be equipped with smart technology, but it’s not a requirement for all of them. In fact, you can think of keypad and FOB locks as the precursors to fully electronic locks. In other words, keypad locks are more advanced than traditional locks, but they don’t all have the full capability of connecting to a smart security system.

Are there any issues with keypad locks?

Every kind of lock has its own set of pros and cons. Here are a few of the potential drawbacks for keypad locks that you’ll want to know before buying them.

  • You might forget your code. For some people, having a physical key means one less passcode to remember.
  • The battery can fail. Most keypad locks are battery-powered, which means that eventually that battery will need to be replaced. There is an option to get keypad locks with a key override. That means, when the battery fails, you can use a key to get it.
  • The numbers can wear off over time. Many keypad locks use soft buttons with numbers on them which can wear away over time. You can easily avoid this problem by changing the passcode periodically or opting for a keypad lock with a digital screen.
  • They can be hacked. Keypad locks use fairly simple technology that can be manipulated. But, criminals will typically opt for easier means of entry than hacking keypad locks. Keypad locks with a smart technology component offer another level of security.

How much do keypad locks cost?

There are many different kinds of keypads on the market, which means that you can find one that is right for your budget. Basic keypads can range from $45 to $100, making them some of the most affordable options on the market. On the other hand, keypads that function with smart technology can cost up to a few hundred dollars.

When considering the cost of keypad locks, it’s also a good idea to factor in installation costs. While some keypad locks can be installed without the help of a professional, the more advanced versions should be handled by someone with experience.
